Before forming Toto the group, its members performed session work for Steely Dan, Seals and Crofts,[4and Boz Scaggs and Sonny and Cher. [5] Guitarist Steve Lukather is the band's vocalist.
About Toto
The group Toto was formed in 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro and David Paich (who were also well-known studio musicians who worked with Boz Scaggs at the time) and singer/bassist Bobby Kimball. The group's name was derived from the Latin word that means "all-encompassing" and was determined to explore every style of music.
Toto's third release, Turn Back, was an unfulfilling success in 1981. However they came back with their fourth album, Isolation, which contained two songs that were hits including the title track and Roseanna. The album and tour make them a household name around the world.
After a hiatus of a few years, Toto return with the album Fahrenheit in 1986. It's a change from the ballads of their previous albums and includes some heavy rock. It was their first platinum album in North America.
During the recording process of the fifth album the group loses their manager and faces financial challenges. They decide to record a new album and change their name to an entirely different producer. Joseph Williams, the son of John Williams, the legendary film composer and actress Barbara Ruick from 1950s, replaces Fergie Frederiksen as lead vocalist. Joseph is more natural as a frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a needed boost.
In 1999, the band release Mindfields and begins an extensive worldwide tour. After a few months in Europe they head to Japan where the shows are sold out. After a short break, Toto resumes recording and begins recording their first live album entitled Absolutely Live in 1993 which includes the cover of Weezer's track Hash Pipe in response to the band's cover of their hit Africa on a recent tour. Toto's touring lineup is completed by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.

The next year, Toto toured with Ringo Starr's All Starr Band. This was the last time that all the original members of Toto were performing together. The band broke up again after this. Toto came back together for an event benefiting the ALS Foundation in 2010. to raise funds for the ALS Foundation. It was the first time that all the original Toto members had been on stage together in over 31 years. The original members were joined by keyboardist Greg Tambu who filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate who filled in for Shem von Schroeck.

Drummer Shem von Schroeck took over and the band was not the same without Paich and Phillinganes. In 2008, a series of lineup changes and a string of disappointing albums led Toto to break up for a period of time. Toto returned to touring in 2012 after the release of their album 40 Trips Around The Sun.
The album was a return form for the band and the tour supported by sold-out shows in North America and Europe. The reunion of Toto gained momentum with the return of bassist Shem Von Schroeck and guitarist Steve Lukather.
